St. Petersburg, Petrovsky Island

LOCATION

The E. I. Gota works on Petrovsky Island are among St. Petersburg’s earliest manufactories and an example of nineteenth-century industrial architecture. They occupy a large part of the island and belong to the city’s grey belt. This post-industrial site has not found a new life and has become an isolated area, blocking one of the city fabric’s important connections. Petrovsky Island is a key link in the chain of Krestovsky, Petrogradsky, and Vasilievsky islands.

HISTORY

MASTER PLAN

The master plan is based on creating main pedestrian alleys along the existing buildings, providing a clear movement structure across the site. The alleys connect the principal buildings and unite functional zones into a single spatial system.

MASTER PLAN

Vehicle and pedestrian flows are separated: access roads and parking are placed at the site perimeter, while the interior remains primarily pedestrian. Special attention is given
to the embankment, designed as a multi-level public space with viewpoints, descents
to the water, and an amphitheatre.

The steam boiler building is a two-storey industrial structure. In the Soviet period, the main volume was complemented by a tower extension in the concise geometry of constructivism, forming an additional historical layer in the building’s image. Given the existing layout, room dimensions, and character of the façades, the building is suited for conversion to offices. This use preserves the legibility of the historic industrial volume, minimizes intervention in the structural system, and supports contemporary use without losing the building’s architectural identity.

The main building is proposed as an art space with a public library, while the extension will accommodate offices.

RESIN BUILDING

RESIN BUILDING

The project centerpiece is the architecture of the resin building and its extension. This two-building complex is a cultural heritage site and one of the factory’s most outstanding structures, but it is currently in critical condition and requires urgent renovation.

PRODUCTION BUILDING

The single-storey building can be adapted to tenant requirements. A restaurant
with an outdoor terrace is the preferred use.

STEAM BOILER BUILDING EXTENSION

This is one of the few buildings where none of the protected historic
elements survived. The project therefore offers an opportunity to reconstruct
it using contemporary materials.

Rehabilitating the waterfront facade, creating a promenade, water access and mooring areas will reconnect water and pedestrian routes and restore important urban links. Renovation of the main buildings will introduce new functions, create destinations
and integrate the site into the sociocultural framework of the central islands.
The redevelopment will draw attention to the heritage site
and help restore the surrounding urban fabric.
