Izakaya is a distinctive spatial typology that emerged from small sake shops where guests ate directly at the counter. The word means «a place to drink sake» and reflects an atmosphere of informality, simplicity, and communication. These venues became part of urban culture while preserving their democratic character and traditions. Their symbol is the red paper lantern — aka-chochin — still marking the entrance to an izakaya.

The Japanese izakaya project in Novosibirsk steps away from a dialogue with local history and invites visitors into an atmosphere of silence, calm, and timeless human values, while preserving a connection with the region’s untouched nature.

The interior continues the architecture rather than acting as a separate decorative layer. Its character comes from clean geometry, thoughtful function, fluid lines,
and the natural beauty of materials.

As snacks were added to the drinks and barrels began
to serve as seats, the space started to transform. New patterns of use required a flexible interior, adaptable
to different ways of accommodating guests.

The project responds to information overload and avoids excessive monumentality

by a two-level structure with a setback beneath a mono-pitched roof, creating
an accessible terrace.
